For equestrians, spending long hours outdoors is part of the lifestyle, whether on the ground around the stables doing chores, training, competing, or simply enjoying a ride. All these hours also prolong sun exposure which takes a toll on both riders and horses, potentially leading to long term skin damage. Proper sun care is essential for maintaining healthy skin and keeping hydrated.
Being outdoors offers many benefits, such as fresh air and exercise, soaking up those rays can ward off depression, help manufacture Vitamin D – which is essential for bone health, and even help regulate blood pressure. However prolonged sun exposure can pose serious risks. UV rays produce massive amounts of reactive free radicals that cause cell damage and premature aging and increase the risk of skin cancer for riders.
Dehydration is another major concern for riders out in the heat. Excessive heat and sweating can lead to fluid loss, impacting energy levels, performance and long-term overall health.
Sun Care Tips for Riders
Wearing the Right Gear
Equestrian riders can protect themselves from the sun by choosing appropriate clothing and gear. Lightweight, breathable fabrics with built-in UV protection are ideal for keeping cool while shielding the skin from harmful rays. Being sun savvy from an early age is I important because although young skin bounces back quicker and doesn’t show damage – the effects of sun exposure at a young age become evident later on in life.
Protect yourself from harmful rays with clothing such as:
- Long-sleeved breathable shirts with a high necksuncare
- Sun sleeves (With UV fabric)
- Gloves
- Buffs for neck coverage (Silk fabrics are breathable and light weight)
- Wide-brimmed helmets and caps
- Sun Visors (These can be fitted on to your riding hat)
Suncreen
Most of us know the importance of wearing sunscreen during summer months to protect our skin from sun burn and damage, but it should be a year-round preventative health measure. You should wear a sunscreen every day, even on cloudy days, because up to 80 percent of the sun’s rays can pass through the clouds. It does not matter what season it is or what the weather is like, those harmful ultraviolet rays are abundant. This means, every single day of the year, no matter what the weather is like, you need to be applying SPF.
When out and about apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 to all exposed skin, including the face, neck, and hands. Reapply every two hours, especially during long rides or after sweating. Lip balm with SPF protection or a zinc based balm is also important to prevent sunburn on the lips.
Reasons to wear sunscreen daily:
- It protects your skin from UV rays: Sunscreen blocks harmful UV rays and protects the skin from sunburn and skin damage. Look for products that contain at least an SPF15 and use each and every day.
- It lowers your risk of skin cancer: Skin cancer is one of the most common cancers and by applying sunscreen each day, you cut your risk of contracting skin cancer in half..
- It prevents premature aging: It is the most inexpensive and easiest way to prevent accelerated skin aging. Sun damage from UV rays causes photoaging of the skin. This is characterized by discoloration and a breakdown of collagen, which contributes to lines, sagging and wrinkles.
- Keeps the skin nourished and hydrated: The sun’s harmful UV rays can accelerate dehydration and leave the skin feeling tight, dry, and irritated.
What to look for when selecting sunscreen:
- Broad spectrum – providing protection against UVA and UVB rays
- Choose a sports formula – this will protect the skin despite perspiration
- Sun protection factor (SPF): A minimum of SPF 15 or 30 is recommended for everyday wear. When in direct sun reapply sunscreen to exposed areas every 90 to 120 minutes.
- Non-comedogenic: Product that has been specifically formulated not to block or clog pores.
- Anti-irritant and non-allergic: Products have been dermatologically tested to ensure that they are safe and well tolerated by sensitive skin and will not cause reactions or irritation.
Sunglasses with UV protection are a valuable addition to protect your eyes from the sun’s glare and harmful rays. Choose wrap around styles or glasses with secure straps to stay in place while riding.
Stay Hydrated
Hydration is critical for equestrians spending time in the sun. Dehydration can lead to fatigue, dizziness and dehydration. It is essential to drink plenty of water before, during, and after riding. Carry a reusable water bottle and take regular sips to stay hydrated throughout the day. Being hydrated helps the body to cool down more effectively. It also lubricates joints, supports brain function and aids the transport of oxygen and nutrients to the working muscles, all of which are impaired in a dehydrated state.
Electrolyte drinks can be beneficial for replacing minerals lost through sweating, especially during intense exercise or in extreme heat. Avoid sugary or caffeinated beverages, as these can contribute to dehydration. Staying hydrated not only supports your performance, increases your endurance and reduces the risk of heat-related illnesses, ensuring you can safely enjoy your time in the saddle.
